Earlier this week—just days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot at Windsor Castle in your Pinterest board’s dream wedding—you might have been a little shook by the revelation that the bride is worth a lot more than you think.
After eight seasons on her hit show Suits, and a handful of smaller roles, Meghan amassed a net worth of around 6.6 million AUD.
But that sum is nothing compared to Prince Harry’s.
Although his salary as a captain in the Royal Air Force wasn’t astronomical, the prince is worth around $53.1 million AUD through his family and work for the monarchy.
So where does all that money come from? Let’s break it down, shall we?
INHERITANCE FROM DIANA, PRINCESS OF WALES
Before her death in 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales’, estate was worth an estimated $37 million AUD. This wealth was accumulated from her divorce settlement from Prince Charles, as well as stocks and investments.
In her will, Diana bequeathed equal amounts of her net worth to her sons, to be given to them upon their 30th birthday (both are now in their 30s). With inflation, each son inherited around $17.8 million from their mother.
As well as the stocks and money, they each own various items of her jewellery, clothes, and belongings, with unknown value.
INHERITANCE FROM ELIZABETH, THE QUEEN MOTHER
After the Queen Mother passed away in 2002, it was revealed that she had left around $25 million in heritance to her two great-grandsons, William and Harry.
However, Harry received the lion’s share of the sum—the reasoning was that William would eventually inherit the Duchy of Cornwall from his father (Cornwall automatically is inherited by the Prince of Wales, which is what William will be when his father ascends the throne), that duchy comes with a huge estate (estimated to be worth around $1.3 billion), and Harry would not.
Harry and William also reportedly received jewels from the Queen Mother, with unknown value.
SALARY FROM THE ARMY
Harry also served in the Royal Air Force as a captain and pilot for more than 10 years, before he retired from active duty in 2015. According to reports, he earned around $70,000 a year.
